Permanent Soil Nailing
Long-term earth retention for deep excavations and steep slopes.
Permanent soil nailing is a top-down construction method used to stabilize existing ground. Steel bars ("nails") are drilled and grouted into the soil, then tied into a facing system (shotcrete, cast-in-place concrete, or precast panels). PB&A has been designing permanent soil nail walls since the early days of the technology—including the first soil nail wall in the Western United States. We use advanced analysis tools and decades of field experience to deliver safe, buildable, and cost-effective permanent systems.
Where It Works Best
- Deep excavations in urban environments
- Slope stabilization
- Bridge and roadway projects
- Essential facilities and critical infrastructure
Key Benefits
- Efficient use of space – Minimizes footprint behind the wall
- Cost-effective – Often more economical than massive retaining walls
- Adaptable during construction – Nail lengths can be adjusted as conditions vary
- Long-term performance – Properly designed nails provide durable service
